Use a bottle warmer to warm formula or breastmilk. Do not microwave. However, if you want to prepare warm milk, microwave water in a cup or glass bottle and then add formula. Always check milk’s temperature before feeding your baby.

3. The formula is not good anymore

If you are feeding your baby formula, make sure it is not expired. You can use the formula for one month once you open it. You have to be sure it has not gone bad or taste any different.

Some babies are very responsive to any kind of change and they certainly do not like the taste. However, changing the formula could help significantly.

4. Bottle type/nipple type is not comfortable anymore

When your baby is on her way to teething, that is the most difficult time for moms. No matter what timeline your baby follows for teething, it is going to be a task to feed them.

My kids started teething around 10 or 11 months, the first thing was they started refusing the bottle and sometimes even nursing. It was very stressful for me being a mom to feed them. After battling a few days, I changed their bottles from Avent to Tommee tippee as their nipples are relatively soft and easy to suck on. Thus, this was less painful for him on the gums.

7. Your baby’s tummy is full

Another considerable reason is your baby might have started solids, thus she has been taking less milk, once you have fed solid wait for some time and then give milk after an hour or so.

How you can help baby to eat

There is not much you can do to force your baby with food when he or she is resisting. Just a few precautions and then wait because this phase will be over before you even know it.

1. Do not stress

If your baby is refusing the bottle and you are pretty much familiar with the issue your baby might be going through, then the first thing you should do is DO NOT STRESS. 

Try not to make it a control issue or force your baby to eat, this would worsen the situation and leaves you more frustrated and mentally exhausted. 

Try not to stress as this too shall pass. Your baby is going to resume eating anytime soon. 

2. Consider changing a soft nipple or a sippy cup

If your baby is nursing and not taking a bottle then the considerable option is to change nipple size or bottle brand which has a softer nipple. 3. Small and frequent feedings

Even mom and dad both have to go to work or either one of them stay at home for looking after kids, no matter how much sleep deprived you are, you have to get things done and that leaves you more stressed, agitated and definitely not emotionally or physically healthy.

Well, first things first, for new parents, you have to know that sleep deprivation is a real deal with newborns. The biggest favor you can do yourself during that time is DO NOT STRESS OVER BEING SLEEP DEPRIVED.

Despite all that feedings during the night, your baby might not be sleeping through the night and wakes up more frequently. My kids have not slept throughout the night until they were on breastfeed and even after that too.

Now I can analyze why and what are the reasons they might be waking up which could be helpful for moms too.

If your baby is not sleeping through the night, it could be one of these reasons you might want to rule out.

These are the sleep problems and issues you might be having with your babies which is not helping them to sleep through the night.

1. Tummy is Not full 

This is a very common reason for your baby to wake up due to an empty stomach. Breastmilk digests within 60 to 90 minutes whereas formula-fed babies sleep a little longer.

Some moms choose to formula feed at night so they could have another hour of sleep for their sanity and babies could sleep better too. Using a formula at night could also solve sleep problems for those who are good eaters and get hungry every hour.

Babies sleep while eating and then wake up after half an hour. this happens when your baby does not really eat well and falls asleep because she may be too tired or too hungry. Doctor suggest to undress your baby (just leaving the diaper on) and then feed 15 to 20 minutes each side (if breastfeeding) and then add 2 oz to 4 oz more for top feed.

Just be sure that your baby ate well before sleeping and burped before you lay her down.

2. The temperature might be too high or low

If you have a nursery set up for your newborns or toddlers, the temperature should be moderately cool so that they could sleep well through the night. 

If your baby is wearing fleece onesie and your room is not too cold then it might get too warm for the baby at night or vice versa. 

You have to make sure they are not too warm or not too cold during the night.

You have to keep the temperature and the baby’s clothes fabric in mind. 

The ideal temperature for babies is 68 degrees Fahrenheit to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Crib or bassinet are placed close to a vent 

My son never liked his bassinet and crib and one of the main reasons was, we had put his crib in our room close to vent and it just did not work for him. However, I made sure for my daughter that her crib should not be close to vent and she did relatively good about sleeping in a crib and her bassinet.

4. Swaddling or no swaddling 

Swaddling is a great thing to do with babies. It is a very common practice by moms. 

As a new mom and a learner, I did not follow swaddling very religiously. Some days I did and some days I skipped it. 

Although my mom always advised me to do that and somehow that did not work for me very well. I would dress up my son in a onesie and put him to sleep. 

Do not take my advice on this – but I have used blankets for both of my kids. My son co-slept and I always felt to have a blanket on him. 

I wish I could do a good swaddle and wrap my babies at night when they were little, which could even help them sleep better.

Make sure that you do swaddle your baby so that your baby would feel safer and less frightened throughout the night.

Whereas my daughter slept in her bassinet and crib and she had managed a blanket very well. I kept a close eye on her even in the middle of the night. As we all were sharing a room so it was closely monitored.

5. Too few layers or too many layers

Too many layers for your baby at night is not a good idea if you have a central air-conditioner and heating system. 

Rather it depends on where you live. If you happen to live in colder regions and no central heating then you might want to add a couple more layers for your baby to stay warm and cozy to sleep better 

If you live in a warmer region with less access to electricity or air conditioners, you need to keep your baby in a very light thin layer of clothing. 

I recommend to keep their feet covered during winters but putting a hat on during the night is not a good idea. Sometimes it covers babies’ eyes or nose too while they move their head during the night. That tends to wake them up and cry out because of that.

This happened to my kids when they were newborn a couple of times while wearing a non-slip hat. It somehow covered her face and she was crying her lungs out.

6. Night-time clothes

There are two things to consider if you are putting your baby to sleep dressed up in a onesie (footie) even if they have grown out of the swaddling stage.

Using buttoned onesies for nights get airy for babies and sometimes they tend to feel cold at night (if you are following no blankets policy).

Using zip sleep and play onesie is a great clothing item to buy for babies because it will keep your baby packed and they feel more comfortable while asleep.

My favorite onesies for my kids are by Little Me. These are the ones every parent should have for their kids. They are great for sleeping and playing as well.

7. Your baby might be too sensitive to noise

Well to be honest when babies are tired all they want is to sleep wherever they can sleep anywhere even with loud music on. It’s just that THEY NEED TO SNOOZE. 

You might have wondered just like I did. Why is my baby waking up just after a good 20 minutes sleep to a floor cracking sound?

Just like my kids, there must be some other babies who are super responsive to any kind of sounds even while they are asleep. They just could not sleep better and keep waking up. What moms got to do when they have to get chores done and wait for kids to fall asleep.

The moment you step on the floor your floor cracking sound is so lethal that it could wake your baby up or get uncomfortable at night or during a daytime nap. 

You have to wake up, hold your baby, nurse again and then wait for getting her to be in deep sleep. Either way, you are worse off. You actually cannot do anything when you need to do some laundry, or you need to get your dishes done.

Using Sound Machine

I would highly recommend you to get a noise machine. 

A lot of moms swear by using the sound machine for their babies to sleep during the day or night, that could solve the baby’s sleep problems significantly. It could minimize loud noises of household chores and your baby could sleep longer and better.

This one is perfect for traveling. Compact, portable and something that works well on the outlets everywhere. 

8. Your baby might be Overtired

If your baby is too tired, she going to take time going to sleep. And if she does sleep, she is more vulnerable to wake up in a few minutes after sleeping and keep waking up.

Gently massaging an overtired baby could help sleep her better. Use coconut or olive oil to massage baby at night for a more comfortable sleep.

9. There is a need to burp 

Your baby would certainly wake up if there is a gas issue going on. Although you have just put your baby down and your baby is gonna wake up because of gas. The best practice is to have your baby burp before putting to sleep and they keep waking up for a few months due to this issue because they cannot sit up or burp on their own.

You have to deal with that. Trust me, it will get better with time.

Try using gas drops if your baby has started solids lately and her stomach is having a hard time adjusting to the new textures. This gas drops work best for my kids.

10. Diaper leak

Diaper leak is the most common reason for wake-ups. Few diaper brands cause leakage and have babies wet, due to wet clothes babies tend to feel cold that’s why they wake up 

I was using a different diaper brand for my son other than pampers and every night he woke up to a leak. 

Boys tend to leak more often thus, adjusting their penis downwards while changing diapers could minimize the leaks to a considerable extent.

My only recommendation is of pampers Cruisers. They have better absorption, more room and perform way better during the night.

Put on a dry diaper every night before putting your baby to sleep. If your baby diaper over-soak and tend to leak more frequently at night, you got to go a size up.

11. Dirty diaper 

Your baby keeps waking up if you missed changing a dirty diaper when you just changed a while ago. 

There are chances, your few months old baby is trying to sleep on her own and she keeps waking up. Despite a full tummy, her diaper needs to be changed. Dirty diaper could be one of the reasons she is not going in a deep sleep.

12. Sickness

Last but not least, sickness could be one of the main sleep problems your baby might have. She could not breathe better due to the congested nasal passage, or she might be running a fever. You need to monitor that too.

13. Your baby might be sleeping during the daytime instead of night

This is a very common problem when babies sleep during the day and stay awake at night.

You have to make a clear distinction between the day and night once you are home with the baby after hospital discharge.

Keep day time noisy and nights calm.

Days brighter with more natural light coming through the windows and night dark, calm. Eventually, once your baby gets this day and night difference, it will be much easier.

No matter how tempting it may sound, do not respond if your baby is the mood to talk at night. Even for nighttime feedings, keep a night light and do not brighten up the room. The nighttime feel has to be consistently practiced.

However, I really hope after reading this you will be able to rule out your baby’s sleep problem during the day or night.

14. Baby wants to sleep on your chest

Some babies want to sleep on the chest or they would Co-sleep. The moment you put them down in the crib or bassinet, they would wake up.

My son was like that when he was in his infancy stage. Although I co-slept for 2.5 years and then transitioned on his toddler bed still I it wasn’t tough as I anticipated. The transition went much smoother.

If your baby does not want to sleep in her crib or she just wants to be snuggled, do not stress and go with a flow. Eventually your baby is going to sleep on her own, however, it may take more time for you.

Parenthood comes with so many joys and challenges. Every parent wants his/her child to be healthy and happy all the time. seeing your child uncomfortable or sick at any time of the day could be really stressful for every parent. Especially first time parents get really upset if their child gets sick and the feeling of not being able to convey what is wrong with that tiny little human could break you as a parent.

My son had his first sick days when he was about 4 months. we could not give him medicine so nebulizing was the only option as he was too young for oral medicines. No matter how strong you are as a parent, seeing your child helpless and in pain is so heartwrenching. Baby’s essentials for discomforts and Sick days 

I am going to share my list for keeping your little human comfortable without her conveying about any discomfort she might be having.

  1. Digital Thermometer 

This is the must-have for every parent to have it with you for your baby before her arrival. Monitoring temperature if you feel your child is too warm or uncomfortable is a good practice. You need to have it in your medicine closet at all times.

For rectal temperature monitoring, you need to have this one.

Ear thermometers are great and accurate. Your child would not be too much fussy getting it checked. Otherwise, you can use other digital ones just make sure it is safe for rectal use as well. If your baby’s temperature is more than 100.4 degrees you need to call your doctor.

2. Humidifier 

In case your baby gets cold or you have too much heat on in your house, having a humidifier would be helpful in breathing. If your baby gets cold or flu, a humidifier is something every pediatrician suggests.

If you are using a warm humidifier, make sure you have a proper ventilation system. There is a high risk of having mold in your humidifier so you really have to be extra vigilant that it is super clean and safe.

However, you still have to make sure you keep it clean very often, because the water inside humidifier forms mold over a period of time, sure you don’t want that.

3. Baby Nasal Aspirator

This thing is a MUST for every parent to have it in your cabinet even before your child gets sick. While your baby is getting big and strong, he is developing his immune system and this will take time and it is very likely for your newborn to fall sick, however, this thing will help you suck out all those congested nose boogers which would not have them sleep at night.

Although using a manual Nosefrieda aspirator is a little tricky, my husband always did that for our kids and it is certainly a sanity saver. You can try the electric nose cleaner and it would be must easier.

4. Stuffy Nose

Stuffy nose is very common in babies, so you need saline drops to soften all those crusty boogers in your baby’s nose. Just spray 2 to 3 times in each nostril and this will help suck out all that mucus out of baby’s nose.

If you feel your baby has trouble breathing due to a blocked nose and she has trouble falling asleep, spray a few times and your baby would sleep comfortably.

Also when you notice baby is getting symptoms of a cold or stuffy nose, rub a little bit of Vicks Baby Rub on baby’s feet and put socks on. This remedy works best even for my 3-year-old.

For better sleep and less stuffy nights, using a chest rub may help through the night.

Boogie wipes are a must-have. Not only they help in keeping baby’s nose soft and doesn’t make it red due to multiple wipe offs but also it helps in cleaning crusty, mucousy nostrils.

5. Fever Reducer

A fever reducer and pain reliever in your sick days kit is a must, but you should use it only if advised by your doctor. Tylenol and Motrin for infants are considered safe for babies and are over the counter medicines that can be used as a fever reducer, teething pain or as prescribed by your doctor.

When you are traveling on long flights, you must have to carry them with you.

Note: when you feed your baby any medicine as prescribed by your pediatrician, always dispense it with the help of a dispensing syringe on the side of your baby’s cheek. Dispense gently and do not do it straight in the throat. This could be risky in many aspects.

For babies aged 0 to 3 months, you can use a pacifier dispenser to feed the medicine.

6. Gas reliever

If your baby is formula-fed, you might be going to need this and when you are going to introduce solids, you have to have this. babies stomachs are tiny and it takes time to digest food and getting used to.

For my son, I had used Mommy bliss gripe water night time. I highly recommend that.

However, for my daughter, I had used Gas drops by little remedies. Whenever she gets uncomfortable at night or she ate something gassy, I gave her before putting her to sleep, so she doesn’t get upset at night due to stomach pain.

8. Itch reliever

This is something I had discovered when my son had so much itchiness all over his body. When he was about 3 months he used to scratch so much that it bled. I had been doing everything but it was not getting better.

Although newborns have the right amount of moisture in their bodies naturally. You don’t need to apply lotion unless advised by your child’s doctor. But over the period of time, the skin starts getting dry, having it moisturized with organic coconut oil is a good practice though.

For my son, the coconut oil was not working any better at that time because his itchiness had gone really bad. Then I discovered Curel Itch defense lotion by another mom on google who was facing the same issue and swore by it. I had to give it a try and it WORKED. within a couple of days, he was all good. I highly recommend this for babies and adults.

There is no harm having it in your baby’s toiletries. If your baby doesn’t need it, you can use it for yourself.

9. Rash Ointment

Introducing formula, new food or whole milk, rashes are every baby’s story on this journey of life. After trying Desitin and a couple of other rash creams for my son, his pediatrician recommended A+D ointment. It has vitamins A and D which keeps skin soft and moisturized. Therefore, it is safe to use with every diaper change. It really works even with a one-time use.

10. Coconut oil or olive oil for baby’s massage

Massage is super soothing for babies just like adults. They sleep better, and they feel relaxed. Massaging the baby’s belly helps in releasing gas.

You can get this from Amazon, even TJ max snacks section has organic coconut oil. Be sure you get the organic one.

11. Easing constipation

Babies do get constipation just like adults do. Changing formula or anything new in the diet does make babies constipated.

My son had his first when he was about three months and he went about 5 days without pooping. At that early age, I didn’t want to give him any oral medicine. The only thing that worked at that time was vaseline petroleum jelly. I had applied vaseline on a clean Q-tip and inserted it in his rectal area.

Post C-Section Care and Recovery Tips for moms

C-section or Cesarean delivery is a surgical procedure to deliver one or more babies. C section is different than a vaginal delivery. It is performed in case if a mother or a baby is at risk like if there is twin pregnancy or more, breech baby, high blood pressure, or problems with the placenta or umbilical cord.

Post-C-section delivery needs a lot of care to recover faster internally and externally, both.

I have had two C sections 19 months apart to be exact. I was fortunate enough to have a great surgeon. I recovered super quick after my C-section deliveries as my nurses at the hospital gave helpful instructions for quick healing.

C-section Recovery tips to heal faster and better for new moms

1. Sleep and rest

In my experience, I could hardly sleep in the hospital at both of my deliveries. You really have to sleep whenever you can. Once you have a baby it is not easy to fall asleep without worries.

Life has changed already now.

You have to feel healthy, well-rested in order to take care of your baby. Sleep whenever you can because once you have a new addition to your family, you tend to get visitors out of love to see your little one. Eventually, you get more tired and exhausted due to sleep deprivation and guests all day.

However, if you are not physically or emotionally ready to take guests, you may want to delay visits for a few weeks. It all depends on how you feel in your postpartum period.

Some women need more sleep to function properly. At the end of the day, you are the one who is going to take care of the baby besides all that daytime help (if you are lucky enough to have). So you have to take care of yourself first.

2. Scar Tissue Care

Once my baby was out, they stapled me. Voila!!! That’s it …. No medicine to apply. Once my catheter was out I could take shower the next day which was much needed. Also, in just about three days the staples were removed.

The scar heals on its own, you don’t have to apply anything unless it is prescribed by a surgeon. This does not mean that you are not vulnerable to any kind of infection. You really have to watch out for any signs of blood oozing out, infection or swelling.

You may have your partner keep a close eye on your stitches. If you see anything concerning, seek professional advice right away.

3. Pain Medication

Painkillers, like Percocet, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen will be prescribed. Although medicines are to be taken 6 to 8 hours depending on your pain level also you can skip it if you do not feel a need for it.

4. Walk

Make sure your legs are not hurting too much because you might end up having a clot so to deal with that they have very soothing leg pads that ensure blood circulation.

Once your catheter is out you have to go to the bathroom by yourself and you have to actually start walking. Walking is really essential to healing fast. Don’t overdo it.

Sometimes legs start hurting as a consequence of an epidural or spinal you get for delivery. If your legs keep hurting once you get home, you can get compression socks to ensure your legs are not giving you a hard time along with new mom struggles.

5. No Heavy Lifting

Do not pick anything heavier than the baby. If you have a toddler, do not hold her out of emotions for at least 2 weeks. Please DO NOT PICK older kids up for at least two weeks.

Your body from inside takes a while to heal. But heavy lifting and not resting may cause an “umbilical hernia” and you might end up again in the hospital for another surgery. In adults, too much abdominal pressure could cause an umbilical hernia, in case you have multiple surgeries back to back.

6. Wearing Belly belt

Hospitals provide you with belly belt after a C-section. It is highly recommended to wear belly wrap, it will not only help you with a lot of support around your abdominal area but also it will help you get in shape by shrinking your abdominal muscles quickly.

7. Avoid stairs 

Avoid going up and down the stairs for at least two weeks. If you really have to depend on your house configuration, room, bathroom, and kitchen location, then be careful to do it once or twice only if you think you are ready also your body is ready to handle this.

8. Breastfeeding

After delivery, it takes about 3 to 5 days to have a milk supply right away. For both of my deliveries, it took a couple of days to get the right amount of supply. This made my babies lose more than 10% of their birth weight,  so I had to supplement to meet their eating requirements as per the pediatrician advice. Always consult your doctor.

If you are a first-time mom and you are planning to breastfeed it is always a good idea to have a lactation consultant help you how to latch on your baby. It seems really easy but some babies are hard to latch on. Hospitals offer a lactation class at the hospital for new moms. Those are really helpful.

Place a pillow in your lap to elevate baby for nursing, so you don’t have to bend on to your baby rather bring your baby on a reasonable height and position to nurse.

9. Bleeding

Watch out for any excessive bleeding after delivery. It should decrease with time/days. Anything that is heavier than a previous day tells you are overdoing it and your body needs rest.

You might want to know what other health issues could occur during postpartum. 

10. Dealing with Constipation

You definitely going to need some stool softeners. They give you these in hospital but you have to keep having them for about 10 days unless you get a regular bowel movement. At my first delivery, I had to take it for more than a month. But the second time it was just about three weeks.

I highly recommend Colace Stool Softener tablets.

However, drinking rose water would help you a lot with constipation.

11. What to eat and what not

It is always advised to have a soft whole-grain kind of food post-delivery. This will help in milk supply as well as your bowel movement would be less painful if you have a vaginal delivery.

Wait,  did anyone tell you that when you have a c section delivery you won’t be able to feel your abdominal area for about six months at least?

Surprising right?

Well yes, the reason why your nerves get slashed so it will take more time to get all those sensations back.

Coming back to food – drink a lot of meat broth or veggies broth (if you are vegetarian).

Boil eggs, oatmeal, salt, and black pepper spiced minced meat, bone broth. Take as much soft food as you can. It would help you heal better and your intestines would thank you.

Well if you can’t have all those things, eat whatever you feel like eating.

Taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of your baby at this point in time. Do not take it lightly. It may take more time to recover/heal internally and externally than in vaginal delivery. A healthy mom can take care of her family in a better way.
